can the group insertion be used to create a message and be display for a specific category, I selected the group as a document and select the category but the document doesn't show up when category is open.

No, it can't.
If you select "document" instead of "item" that means only that are creating a list of documents, like faq or news...
Those insertions are usely connected to the area and not to the category, anyway.
